چکیده

For commercial production of wheat and barley, grain yield (GY), grain protein concentration (GPC) and protein composition are considered important. Genetic (G) and environmental (E) factors are important constraints affecting GPC and protein composition in wheat and barley. This thesis examined the options to govern GPC and protein composition in wheat and barley grain by using G and E factors. The results showed that combination of G and E factors played an important role, more important than single factors solely, to determine GPC, protein composition, accumulation and protein breakdown in wheat and barley grains. Differences in maturation times of wheat and barley plants, due to variation in G and E factors, were found to be a significant factor in determining GPC and protein composition. By governing the maturation times, using different genotypes, N application rates and timings, preand post-anthesis temperature, the options to govern GPC and protein composition increased. Early maturing cultivars, N application at anthesis and high pre-anthesis temperature resulted in high amounts of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)-extractable proteins (TOTE). Late maturing cultivars, N application at spike formation and high post-anthesis temperature resulted in high percentage of SDSunextractable polymers into total polymers (%UPP). Pre-anthesis temperature influenced mainly TOTE, while post-anthesis temperature influenced mainly %UPP. Maturation time was found more important for determining GPC and protein composition at high temperature while at low temperature late nitrogen supply was of higher relevance. Differences in the buildup of TOTE and polymeric proteins were found to initiate from 12 days after anthesis and thereafter the build-up rate pertained throughout the grain maturation period. In barley, breakdown of proteins at malting were found dependent on plant maturation time and GPC i.e. higher breakdown rate at higher GPC. A negative correlation was found between GY and TOTE and between TOTE and %UPP. The results from this thesis help to understand how GPC, protein composition, accumulation and breakdown are governed in wheat and barley by various G and E factors. Moreover, the results may help in creating a simulation based quality model in which both G and E factors can be used to model GPC and protein composition in wheat and barley.

Application of Mathematical Models to Estimate Metabolizable Energy Contents of Energetic Concentrate Feedstuffs for Poultry

A study using 51 wheat, 56 barley and 34 oat grain samples was conducted to investigate the feasibility of predicting the apparent metabolizable energy (AME) value of these cereals for poultry. Stepwise regression analyses were performed to evaluate the relationship of AME with starch, ether extract (EE), crude fiber (CF), soluble sugar (SS), ash and crude protein (CP) (for wheat and barley gra...

Relation between nitrogen nutrition index and production of spring malting barley

Although the nitrogen nutrition index (NNI) is a widely used indicator of plant nitrogenstatus, no model of NNI calculation for spring barley (Hordeum vulgare) reflecting also specificmalting requirements on grain has been published. The aim of this study was to determinean optimal range of the nitrogen nutrition index (ratio of nitrogen concentration in shootbiomass to critical nitrogen concen...

Wheat and barley seed system in Syria: farmers, varietal perceptions, seed sources and seed management

A total of 206 wheat and 200 barley farmers were interviewed in northeastern Syria to understand farmer perceptions and practice relating to modern varieties, seed sources and seed quality. Wheat farmers had better awareness and grew modern varieties (87%), applied fertilizers (99.5%), herbicides (93%), seed treatment (90%) or insecticides (41%). In contrast barley growers had low awareness (36...

The Effect of Replacing Barley Grain with Powerfeed® in Finishing Diets on the Performance, Serum Sodium and Potassium Concentration, and the Urine pH of Chall Lambs

Thirty six male Chall lambs (four-month old and 26  ±1.5 kg body weight) were randomly assigned into four treatments (nine lambs per treatment) to study the effect of Powerfeed® (a commercial mixture made from wheat processing by-product and wheat bran) on weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, serum sodium and potassium concentration and urine pH. Lambs in control group were fed with...

Association study of wheat grain protein composition reveals that gliadin and glutenin composition are trans-regulated by different chromosome regions

Wheat grain storage protein (GSP) content and composition are the main determinants of the end-use value of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grain. The accumulation of glutenins and gliadins, the two main classes of GSP in wheat, is believed to be mainly controlled at the transcriptional level through a network of transcription factors. This regulation network could lead to stable cross-envir...
